Nat Neurosci (2022). https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1038\/s41593-022-01226-y<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Abstract<br \/>\n&#8220;Navigation and episodic memory depend critically on representing temporal sequences. <strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Hippocampal \u2018time cells\u2019 form temporal sequences, but it is unknown whether they represent context-dependent experience or time per se<\/span><\/strong>. Here <strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">we report on time cells in bat hippocampal area CA1, which, surprisingly, formed two distinct populations<\/span><\/strong>. <strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">One population of time cells generated different temporal sequences<\/span><\/strong> when the bat hung <strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">at different locations<\/span><\/strong>, thus <strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">conjunctively encoding spatial context and time\u2014\u2018contextual time cells\u2019<\/span><\/strong>. A <strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">second population exhibited similar preferred times across different spatial contexts<\/span><\/strong>, thus <strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">purely encoding elapsed time<\/span><\/strong>. When examining neural responses after the landing moment of another bat, in a social imitation task, we found time cells that encoded temporal sequences aligned to the other\u2019s landing. <strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">We propose that these diverse time codes may support the perception of interval timing, episodic memory and temporal coordination between self and others<\/span><\/strong>.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">David B.
