Nat Commun 16, 2832 (2025). https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1038\/s41467-025-57937-w<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Abstract<br \/>\n&#8220;<strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Obtaining a geocentric directional reference from a celestial compass requires compensation for the sun\u2019s movement during the day<\/span> <\/strong>(relative to the observer), which <strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">depends on the earth\u2019s rotation, time of year and the observer\u2019s latitude<\/span><\/strong>. We examine <strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">how insects could solve this problem, assuming they have clock neurons that represent time as a sinusoidal oscillation, and taking into account the neuroanatomy of their celestial compass pathway<\/span><\/strong>. We show how this circuit could exploit trigonometric identities to perform the required spatiotemporal calculations. Our basic model assumes a constant change in sun azimuth (the \u2018hour angle\u2019), which is recentred on solar noon for changing day lengths. In a more complete model,<strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"> the time of year is represented by an oscillation with an annual period<\/span><\/strong>, and <strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">the latitude is estimated from the inclination of the geomagnetic field<\/span><\/strong>.
